Since 2011, NFDS has been implementing a World Bank/Liberian Government project which aims to strengthen the capacity of Liberia to govern and manage their fisheries, reduce illegal fishing and increase local value addition to fish products.

The purpose has been to develop and implement new policy, and legal and management systems with a special focus on monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS).  The project has involved, for example: development of a new fisheries and aquaculture sector policy as well as a new legal framework; training for government staff and stakeholders in the fisheries; provision of technical support for the establishment of a Fisheries Monitoring Centre; provision of technical support to coastal stations along the coast, which serve as operational bases for fisheries surveillance; development of a national MCS strategy.
