SmartFish is the short name for the Implementation of a Regional Fisheries Strategy for the ESA-IO region Project that aims to increase levels of social, economic and environmental development and deeper regional integration in the ESA-IO region through the sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources.

NFDS in cooperation with partners has been implementing this project since 2011 in the countries of Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, DR Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

NFDS Africa has been considering aspects of Monitoring Control and Surveillance (MCS), risk assessment, data harmonisation, review of trade policies, development of best practice cases, developing a communications strategy and working to promote fish consumption and fish supply.
