Fifth Global Fisheries Enforcement Training Workshop

March 2016 - Per Erik Bergh (Managing Director), Mark Ssemakula (Project Officer) and Kristin v. Kistowski (Senior Advisor) attended the 5th Global Fisheries Enforcement Training Workshop (GFETW), held in Auckland, New Zealand from the 7th to the 11th of March 2016. Organised by the International Monitoring Control and Surveillance (IMCS) Network and hosted by the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industry (MPI) the meeting was an opportunity for countries, inter-governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, industry experts, researchers and other industry partners to exchange information on the latest techniques and technologies and to strengthen communication ties towards successful MCS in the fisheries sector.

The workshop showcased regional and global collective efforts in combatting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing such as the FISH-i Africa Task Force that operates in the Western Indian Ocean. Mr. Bergh presented on the use of risk assessment as a tool in MCS and used examples from NFDS Africa's work in the Indian Ocean to showcase the value and benefits of intergrtating risk assessment into MCS planning.

The winners of the 2nd Stop IUU Fishing Awards were announced at the workshop with the Indian Ocean Commission SmartFish programme recieving recognition for their work with the Multi-Agency Task Team in Tanzania and for efforts to increase compliance through registration and licensing.

Members of the NFDS team were in London for the 9th International Forum on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing at Chatham House.
