Steps taken towards the agreement and eventual implementation of SWIO Regional MTCs

March 2015 – Per Erik Bergh (NFDS Managing Director) and Peter Manning (NFDS Consultant) were in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania last week to discuss the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) Regional Minimum Terms and Conditions (MTC) for Fishing Access. The meeting was organized by the SWIOFC Secretariat, with support from SmartFish Project and WWF, and attended by country participants from Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles and Tanzania. MTCs empower the coastal states to engage effectively with DWFN to secure effective, coherent and coordinated management of shared fish stocks, reduce the MCS costs and increase equity in benefit sharing. NFDS is currently engaged in two projects working on MTCs, one with WWF looking particularly at catches and associated conditions and with SmartFish focusing on technical MTCs.
