Combatting illegal fishing and fisheries crime

Combatting illegal fishing is a key area of NFDS’s expertise and thirty percent of our projects include this area of work.

Combatting illegal fishing is key to reaping the benefits of sustainable fisheries. But as illegal fishing is a complex, ever-changing and multi-faceted threat, continuous re-assessment of risks as well as development and implementation of new approaches are required. NFDS’s services in this area include, for example, risk assessments, support to implementation of ‘anti-IUU fishing’ management measures and regulations, development of and support to various MCS tools and operational centres and the coordination of partners and international players. But importantly, NFDS’s other service areas also contribute to combatting illegal fishing, for example sustainable fisheries management, fisheries legal work, capacity building and awareness-raising.
