Based in Africa, NFDS sees first-hand the importance and potential of fisheries to both livelihoods and national economies.
However, it also sees the threats of mismanagement and neglect as well as other governance issues, including corruption, illegal fishing, environmental pollution, etc. NFDS works to promote and support sustainable fisheries management in marine and inland systems in over fifty percent of our projects. Our services in this area include, for example, development of fisheries management plans, conducting risk assessments, support to and evaluations of scientific and MCS observer programmes and monitoring programmes, technical assessments and evaluations of MCS systems, support to implementation of management measures and ecosystems approach to fisheries and assessments of fisheries agreements.
