EatFish Consumption Surveys in Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia

EatFish Consumption Surveys in Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia

April 2016 - Mark Ssemakula (Project Officer) and David Boyer (Consultant) travelled to Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia to conduct follow-up fish consumption surveys as part of NFDS’s continued work on the EatFish project.

NFDS have over the last months been working with local partners on tailored awareness campaigns in two priority locations in each of the countries, aimed at assisting in eliminating hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition by promoting an improvement in fish consumption, particularly small whole fish. Campaigns have also been undertaken to improve the availability of, and access to, supplies of fish and fish products. These were aimed to facilitate improved fish consumption and improve the hygiene of fish handling, storage and cooking conditions.

Following the interventions, at least 200 households in each of the three countries were interviewed to collect follow-up information (building on the surveys undertaken prior to the interventions) on the level of food security and the extent and nature of fish consumption in individual households and specifically to gauge the success of the recent intervention campaigns.

The Project is supported by the EU funded IOC SmartFish Programme under its Food Security component that is implemented by the FAO.
