Fisheries legislative framework consultation in Tanzania

Fisheries legislative framework consultation in Tanzania

June 2018 — Sandy Davies (Technical Director), Judith Swan (Legal, Institutional and Policy Expert) and Mathew Markides (Legal Expert) assisted the United Republic of Tanzania in preparing their new draft fisheries legislative framework for the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) fisheries and in a process of consultation with a wide range of stakeholders.

Ms Davies said, “It has been very rewarding to be able to assist in the formulation of legislation towards enabling the United Republic of Tanzania to better protect their national interests and the marine environment. Fisheries resources are under increasing threat from growing populations resulting in increased food security issues, from overfishing and from illegal fishing and destructive fishing methods. Having the right laws in place to protect and promote the Tanzanian EEZ fisheries is vital to underpin successful and thriving blue growth.”
