SADC Regional Capacity Development Workshop on Transparency in Fisheries Governance

SADC Regional Capacity Development Workshop on Transparency in Fisheries Governance

September 2019 — Per Erik Bergh (Chief Executive Officer) represented Stop Illegal Fishing at the 4th Consultative Workshop for East Africa, southern Africa, Indian Ocean (EA-SA-IO) Region and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Regional Capacity Development Workshop.

The workshop, held in Livingstone, Zambia from 2-3 September 2019, was organised by SADC in partnership with the SWIOFish Project, Stop Illegal Fishing and WWF, and was attended by representatives from SADC Member States and other countries that share the South West Indian Ocean ecosystem with SADC States.

The meeting focused on issues around transparency in vessel records management and authorization schemes. The forthcoming publication on ‘Document Verification Manual: Vessel Identity’, produced by Stop Illegal Fishing and Trygg Mat Tracking, was validated by the meeting. Produced to support efforts by coastal and port States to verify vessel identity and focus enforcement efforts on high risk fishing vessels the Manual provides practical guidance and case material for fisheries enforcement officers and allied agencies.
