South West Indian Ocean regional workshop on minimum terms and conditions for foreign fisheries access

September 2015 – Per Erik Bergh (NFDS Managing Director) was in the Seychelles to facilitate a regional meeting organised by the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission with support from IOC–SmartFish, WWF and SWIOFISH.  The meeting continued the process to develop a set of minimum terms and conditions (MTCs) for the coastal states of the Western Indian Ocean to be presented at the next Commission meeting.  The participants worked to prepare an amended text of the Protocol for MTCs for Foreign Fisheries Access in the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission (SWIOFC) Region and to agree on a set of conditions that will harmonise their approach to the conditions attached to allowing access to foreign fishing vessels to fish with the EEZs of the coastal countries.  This was the third regional technical meeting and the protocol is aimed at fisheries related to tuna and tuna like species
