MCS and compliance with the Conservation and Management Measures of the SEAFO and SIOFA

December 2018 — Per Erik Bergh (CEO) facilitated and Sandy Davies (Technical Director) attended an FAO workshop to support the participatory process to assess the MCS current capacity and requirements and to develop action plans for strengthening of MCS within the developing countries of two regional fisheries management organisations or arrangements (RFMOs/RFMAs), the South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO) and the Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA). The workshop was supported by the FAO Sustainable Fisheries Management and Biodiversity Conservation of Deep-sea Living Resources in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) Project and held in South Africa from 10-12 December 2018 involving Angola, Comoros, Mauritius, Namibia Seychelles, South Africa and Thailand.

The purpose was to review and evaluate the effectiveness of existing MCS systems and practices in these counties and identify activities to strengthen MCS and compliance with the Conservation and Management Measures of the SEAFO and SIOFA and to develop draft action plans and activities to strengthen MCS and compliance.
