New phase of a project to improve fish supply and consumption underway

April 2015 - Sandy Davies (NFDS Technical Director) and Mark Ssemkula (Project Officer) were in Accra, Ghana for the initial meeting of the Norwegian Development Agency (Norad) funded 3 year project to support the Fisheries Intelligence and MCS support in West Africa initiative. The project brings together the six member countries of the Fisheries Committee of the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) in a new regional partnership to cooperate in fisheries management and particularly stopping illegal fishing.

The agreed next steps are to conduct regional training and develop national focus groups prior to the full launch of the Task Force at the Ministers meeting for the FCWC in December 2015.

The Coordination Team of the project comprises of the FCWC secretariat, Trygg Mat Tracking, Stop Illegal Fishing and NFDS.

June 2015 – The ‘EatFish’ project team met at the NFDS offices to begin work on a new phase of an IOC SmartFish Project that is a follow-on to work that NFDS undertook in 2013/2014. The Project is supported by the EU funded IOC SmartFish Programme under its Food Security component that is implemented by FAO. It aims to strengthen food security through the increased consumption and supply of fish in the targeted countries, principally Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia. The activities to be carried out will be as follows: Dave Boyer (Consultant, NFDS) and Henry Kankwamba (Statistician, LUANAR) will be undertaking the initial phase of the project in Rwanda, whilst Mark Ssemakula (Project Officer, NFDS) and Lisungu Moyo (Economist, LUANAR) will be travelling Zambia. Henry and Lisungu are cooperating with NFDS Africa to link work of the EU supported and WorldFish Centre implemented FishTrade Project.
