Supporting effective PSMA implementation in Africa – Kenya

November 2022 - Sandy Davies (Technical Director) represented NFDS and Stop Illegal Fishing at the 2nd Steering Group Meeting for the Programme “Supporting effective PSMA implementation in Africa: Intelligence-led Port Controls”, held from the 1 to 3 November 2022, in Malindi, Kenya.

The meeting was hosted by the Kenyan Fisheries Service in partnership with the Programme implementation team from Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, TM-Tracking and Global Fishing Watch.

Sandy presented to the meeting on several topics including about Stop Illegal Fishing’s coordination with other projects supporting PSMA implementation and she shared lessons learnt from our work. The meeting discussed risk assessment procedures particularly to support the processing of Advanced Requests for Entry into Port (AREPs) by fishing vessels. Countries considered how AREPs provide the first step in assessing the potential risk associated with a fishing vessel and the analysis of the AREP provides a good opportunity to decide on next steps and if a vessel should be prioritised for a port inspection.
