Corruption and fisheries webinar

Corruption and fisheries webinar

June 2020 — Per Erik Bergh (CEO) and Sandy Davies (Technical Director) represented Stop Illegal Fishing during a series of two webinars delivered in conjunction with the U4 Anti-Corruption Resource Centre.

Recent high-profile corruption cases – such as the Ematum case in Mozambique and the FishRot scandal in Namibia – have highlighted the need to understand corrupt practices in the fisheries sector.

Drawing on 20 cases of illegal fishing investigated by the FISH-i Africa Task Force in East Africa Stop Illegal Fishing’s analysis was able to provide a breakdown of the who, why, how, and when relating to corruption. The role of development partners in embedding mitigation measures into future projects was discussed, with concrete recommendations provided for work at the national, regional and international levels.
